Session CD2: Air Transport

Date: 11 May 2016
Time: 9:15 am - 12:30 pm
Venue: R1206, R Core (Shirley Chan Building), PolyU

Session Chair: Dr Achim I. Czerny (The Hong Kong Polytechnic University)

This session is composed of two parts. The first part concerns the following three studies:
  • The first study investigates the impact of the High-Speed Railway (HSR) on the available seats of domestic airlines. Propensity score matching is used to pair routes with HSR entries and those without HSR entries, and then the difference-in-difference approach is used to determine the impact of the HSR entry.

  • The second study evaluates the use of universal service fees (i.e., a transfer payment between consumers) in air transport. More specifically, the study analyses (i) whether a universal service fee improves welfare, and (ii) how a universal fee affects airline networks.

  • The third study investigates the effects of airport-airline vertical arrangements on airport capacity choices under demand uncertainty, where airlines may help the airport to reduce its capital cost.
The second part concerns the following three studies:
  • Using a general-equilibrium model that includes consumers, airlines, and an airport with both aeronautical and non-aeronautical services, the fourth study investigates the decisions of the airport on its aeronautical charge and capacity, as well as the size of its non-aeronautical services.

  • The fifth study examines hub-carrier scheduling and hub-airport congestion pricing by using a simple hub-spoke network model, which incorporates both schedule and congestion delays. Socially and privately optimal congestion-pricing rules are derived and analysed.

  • The final study analyses the effect of airline collaboration on fleet capacity, fleet structures in terms of the number and the size of aircrafts, and load factors. The model features complementary networks, scheduling, price elastic demands, and demand uncertainty.
