Session AB1: Sea and Air Transport

This session consists of a series of studies conducted by the National Taiwan Ocean University (NTOU). The first part focuses on sea transport and the second part focuses on air transport.

Part 1 consists of three studies that examine shipping operations and shipping markets.
  • Shipyards are important in the building of ships for the shipping industry. Currently, China and South Korea are the leaders in the shipping industry. The first study therefore uses the meta-frontier approach to evaluate the efficiency of shipyards in China and South Korea.

  • Global trade is one of the key factors that affect economic development. Liner shipping carriers provide regular shipping services to facilitate trade. The second study therefore uses a data envelopment analysis (DEA) approach to measure the cost efficiency of major global liner shipping carriers.

  • The third study deals with the stowage planning problem or the master bay plan problem of large container vessels. The authors propose a conceptual model that uses a multi-commodity flow network approach to minimize reshuffling.
Part 2 consists of six studies that examine various issues related to air transport.
  • To provide direction for service performance improvement and customer solutions so as to enhance customer service of the free trade port zone (FTPZ) in Taiwan, the first study uses a multilayer quality function deployment (QFD) approach to evaluate customer service.

  • The second study deals with manpower supply planning. The authors use a scenarios-based modelling technique to plan good manpower supply efficiency for uncertain demand.

  • The third study uses a mathematical programming method combined with a time-space network technique to deal with daily dispatching and scale for airline unit load devices (ULDs) under variable and stochastic demand.

  • The aim of the fourth study is to identify important factors that affect customers in Taiwan in their online purchase of flight tickets. In this study, the authors have used an empirical approach to collect data from 300 respondents.

  • The fifth study uses empirical evidence to examine the reaction of stock market to airline crashes in Taiwan.

  • The final study uses the tool of linear regression model to investigate the relationships among the variables of in-flight catering, service environment, passenger satisfaction and loyalty in the airline industry.
