Date: 11 May 2016
Time: 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm
Venue: R1108, R Core (Shirley Chan Building), PolyU

Session Chair: Dr Noorul Shaiful Fitri Abdul Rahman (Universiti Malaysia Terengganu)

This session comprises two parts. The first part consists of two studies that examine the various issues related to shipping and logistics management.
  • The first study examines the factors of the development of Malaysia feeder services by using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) approach. The results of this study contribute to the rank establishment of factors in determining the development of feeder services in Malaysia. Based on the result, the economy and market are the most influential factors related to the demand generated by potential customers.

  • The aim of the second study is to provide an understanding on the extent that logistics operations management has been globally outsourced; its appropriateness in the current global situation; potential threats and opportunities in the future; and finally, recommendations are provided for improvements. The methods of the research consist of using two approaches, namely, in-depth interviews and questionnaires.
This second part consists of two studies that examine risk in the OBOR countries.
  • Risk of terrorism and political violence is an important issue to address. The aim of this study is to therefore evaluate the risks of countries along the OBOR based on the terrorism and political violence risk map of the AON.

  • Since the launch of the OBOR initiative, investment risk has been a key discussion topic for those who are interested in conducting business along the belt and road. The aim of the final study is to therefore discuss a promising risk management tool with focus on possible trade and logistics risks. A define-measure-analyse-control-improve (DMACI) framework is purposed to facilitate the risk assessment and decision making of different OBOR investment projects. Within this proposed framework, the dominant risk(s) in terms of trading and logistic operations can be identified and weighted with the use of an analytical hierarchy process (AHP) method. Project alternatives can be prioritised as well. Corresponding measures for mitigating these risks are also proposed. An application example based on investment in Myanmar is illustrated.
